To ensure proper lubrication of your Shuttleworth system, lube strips should be inspected every three months. If the lube strips are dry to the touch, they should be replaced. If the chain is dry, it is time to change the lube strips. If the chain shows signs of rust, replace both the chain and the lube strips.

The tools required to change the lube strips are a 17-millimeter wrench for the mounting hardware, a 7-millimeter wrench for the nylock nuts, and a 2.5-millimeter Allen wrench for the flathead socket bolts.

First, make sure the equipment is locked out. Remove the Lexan cover off the drive mount assembly to inspect the chain for dryness or signs of rust. If the chain is oily, reattach the cover, unlock the system, and return to operation. If the chain is dry, proceed to step three.

Locate the lube strips underneath the conveyor on the chain side near the drive mount. Cut the tie wrap that is holding the black chain return guard, then slide the chain return guard out of the way. Remove the lube strips by loosening and then removing the mounting hardware.

The Shuttleworth lube strip system consists of the mounting hardware, the mounts for the lube strip, and the lube strip itself, an oil-impregnated piece of plastic that transfers lubrication from the strip to the chain while the system is running. The mounting hardware consists of M4x12 socket heads and M4 nylock nuts.

Insert the new lube strip. Do not over-tighten the nut. By using a nylock nut, you can tighten it down and still allow the strip to float. This allows the lube strip to follow the chain as it runs through the return side. Reinstall the lube strips and the mounts to the system by sandwiching the chain between the lube strips. Install the mounting hardware and make sure the chain path is in line, then tighten the hardware.

Slide the chain return guard over to cover the lube strips. Secure the chain return guard with a tie wrap to prevent it from sliding into the drive mount. Finally, remove the tag to unlock the system.
